Custom royal portrait of a couple with their dog on canvas in a living room

How to Order a Custom Portrait as a Surprise Gift

The best thing about a custom portrait as a gift is that the person does not have to be involved. One photo is enough. These five steps cover everything from the photo to the wrapping.

Step 1: Find the right photo without asking for it

Look in your own camera roll first, then their social profiles, then ask a family member. A good photo has the face clearly visible, in focus and well lit, looking roughly toward the camera. Sunglasses, heavy filters and faces in shadow make the artist's job harder. Our photo guide shows examples.

For a couple or a family you do not need one photo with everybody in it. Send a separate photo of each person.

Step 2: Choose a style that fits the person

You can add a dog or cat to any human portrait with the "Add my pet to the portrait" option on the product page.

Step 3: Pick digital or canvas

A digital copy arrives by email and suits late orders or gifts sent abroad. A canvas print arrives ready to hang. For a wall above a sofa or a fireplace, 18 x 24 inches is the size most customers choose.

Step 4: Approve the preview

Before anything is printed you receive a preview by email. If something is off, tell us and we revise it for free, as many times as needed. Printing starts only when you approve.

Step 5: Keep the secret

Use your own email address at checkout, and if you share a home, send the canvas to a friend or to your workplace.

Ordering for Christmas

Check the Christmas order deadlines first. If you are not sure which photo to use, a gift card lets them choose for themselves.
